| and boy was it a suprise. Looks like PetSmart picked up a gravid WC Rosie for me. She was a pet rock for the last several months, and a fortnight ago, she started getting restless, crawling up and down and all over the tank. 3 days ago she dug out a small bowl in the back corner of the tank, and yesterday began webbing it up, closing herself in. Now her abdomen is severely shrunken, and there's a THICK mat on the bottom, presumably with unrolled eggs in it. Tips on care for an eggsac? Any way to tell if it's fertile? BEFORE: AFTER: | |

LOL congrats! +1 Time to set yourself up with a incubator. You can leave the sac with mom for 30 days, then you can take it from her and put the babies, if the sac if fertile onto the incubator.

| Thought I'd share advice given to me by the wonderful folks over at Tarantula Canada: Here's the email they sent to me
HI Jonah, Congrats on the eggsac, though unexpected Here is the rundown for how we incubate our eggsac (some folks may disagree, but this is what works for us)... You should leave the eggsac with the female for 6 to 8 weeks. In this time, do not feed the female and try to make sure that she is not disturbed, even by little things like TV noise [At this point i'd like to point out her exoterra is sitting on top of my TV stand!] or moving the terrarium around. After 6 weeks, if the eggs are fertile, they should be at the "eggs-with-legs" stage.
Remove the eggsac from the female, and open it to see if the sac is good. Dump the contents of the eggsac into an incubator. To make your incubator, use a plastic deli cup and poke lots of needle holes around the lid for ventilation. Line the bottom of the incubator with slightly damp paper towels. The nymphs will lay directly on the towel. Spread the little ones around so that they are not touching each other too much, and pick out any dead or rotten eggs, as these could affect the health of the nymphs around it.
You will then need to incubate the nymphs for another 4 to 6 weeks before the molt to 2nd instar and start eating. If you find the nymphs are sticking together, you may need to lower the humidity a bit. Do not keep the temperature too high, as this will dehydrate the eggs. 24C to 27C (with cooler temps at night) are best. Check on the incubator a few times a day to monitor temperature and humidity. You may need to change the toweling occasionally, especially if you are finding mold or fungus growing inside. Keep the toweling as clean as possible. Watch out for small flies, as they are sometimes attracted to the nymphs and try to lay eggs on them. Please let us know if you have any questions. Take care, Amanda

| Unless mystery daddy is an RCF, it's going to be G Rosea (forget the name change, i'm sticking to what I know!).
So yeah, a plain Jane rosie.
After week 6, once I've pulled the sac, I'll count what's there and place an order for vials from Tarantula Canada.

| Congratulations, keep us updated....
I was hoping I would be in the same position, but my very large 'gravid' female molted last night, and although she is absolutely beautiful, I am a little disappointed

| For the last week, momma's been secluded pretty good down in her hole. She seems to have dug some sub over to the sides of the tank so I couldn't see in, then dragged some up to the entrance and webbed that closed with sub. If I didn't know she was burrowed down there, and glanced in the tank as it was earlier, I'd have assumed she escaped somehow.
Looks like she came out for a drink, tho.
Can't wait to pull the sac.

| Looks like she got hungry and ate the sac sometime in the last few days. I got an incubator ready and was looking to pull the sac today, too | |
