A. avic Dropped Her Sac!!!!!!

A couple days ago I noticed that my 3.5" avic female had re-did part of her tunnel web. She had not been eating for the past 2 1/2 weeks. Then last night I noticed a bunch of webbing in with her, I said to myself that she was either going to molt, or she was going to drop her sac. She only mated with the male once, as soon has he hit her webbing, she shot out her web and jumped the male, she pretty much hooked herself and did the rest herself as well, she was so ready to be bred. After that she wouldn't let the male mate with her again and she would run around the enclosure as he gave chase. So I went out last night as usual, and when I came back there was no change. I kept the room dark and the temp was 80ºF and humidity was also 80%. I checked on her about once an hour, I didn't want to bother her, and then I noticed a yellow glow in the bottom of her new webbing, I knew it was eggs. Then I ended up falling asleep for a couple hours and when I got up in the middle of the night and checked her, she had a very large sac for her size and she was holding it all rolled up nice and white.


I'm SO excited! my first T sac EVER!. I still have to go back and check the records and see how long it took her to drop her sac.

Well all is going well so far, mom still has the sac and each time I look I see her in a new spot.

Well I don't want to get counting chickens, but sure, after all your the one who found the MM cobalt sooner rather then later. But I know I'll be keeping several for myself, they have to fill the void I have, lack of avics, and lack of arboreal s.

avics are good mommys so i wouldnt worry about the sac

I've been thinking about getting a couple more ladies, I have a MM, the father of these eggs out on a 50/50 right now, and was hoping he'd still be good when I got him back, he matured in early may and apparently is still making sperm webs.


I've read they are good mommies, so I'm still on the fence weather or not to let her keep it, or take it in a month.

I can't count this as a success till they are 2nd instar and being shipped out lol. Gotta order me some vials soon.

I paired my A. avic and today I pulled the sac. Everything went just great and I was very nervous and excited to pull this sac, my first T sac EVER!

I kept some records, if there is anything I should include please LMK so I can keep better records.

Here is what I wrote down....

6/17/09 Received MM (I should have wrote down from who but I didn't)

6/18 Paired MM and MF, the female threw herself onto the male and practically raped him, he was able to get in a couple good inserts.

8/11 Female lays sac

9/27 Finally pulled sac, gave her 2 extra weeks as I worked up the courage to pull it lol. Opened the sac to find several healthy, 1st instar slings. Found 7 bad eggs and one dead eggs with legs or first instar, wasn't sure as it was dried up and shriveled.

I offered her a nice cricket, but she wasn't interested, she was working on patching the big hole I cut in her home and was upset I took her sac, I took out the cricket and stuffed her sac and gave it back to her, which she accepted.

NOTE: She was also fresh from a molt (date in another notebook ATM) and was well fed before being introduced to the male. Temps were between 75º-82ºF (Higher in day, lower at night). Humidity was kept at 80% by me spraying every 2-3 days.

Now for a couple pics....


Here is the sac, it was a bit bigger then I thought it was, but was mostly layers and layers of webbing...




I first thought I had all bad eggs after I got down some layers as it was a black mass inside, then a few layers later I saw a white speck moving, which turned out to be a molt. I was so nervous to squish anyone who might be alive in there. I had to stop to regroup myself I was shaking so much lol.

Here are the 1st instars, some of them are much fatter then others, I hope that doesn't mean they fed on someone Also 3 of them were holding onto bad eggs, but I left them be with it and hope they drop it so I can get it out. I took out all molts and bad eggs right away.



This one is a bit brighter, and some also had molts stuck to them, but I also left them be and will get them when they fall off...




Now I just hope my G. rosea sac is good like this one, she's being a bad mom and leaves her sac unattended for periods of time. I'll be pulling hers at 30 days and hoping for the best.

do not under any circumstances use a heat mat with your egg sac!!!

No heat mat here at all. I just have them on the deli incubator seen in the pics and then inside a plastic shoe box, humidity is 80% and temps are pretty constant in there too nice 82ºF, they look like they could molt soon.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!



As of last night the babies legs have started to turn dark, some are more dark then others, but it appears they will be molting very soon into 2nd instars!

Still waiting on the molt to second instar. They have dark legs and some have been on their backs, but they flip back and forth.

should molt in the next couple days. i wouldnt be suprised if they started molting by this time tomorrow night.

UPDATE: They started molting into 2nd instars LAST NIGHT!. As of this AM I have 12 molted out so far!
